Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals

The number of unwanted adult and young animals that are euthanased each year in South Africa is staggering.  The only viable method to reduce this trend is large scale sterilisation supported by continuous education.

Animals in rural communities where humans live below the breadline fulfil a working role in the household - they provide humans with security, a source of food, pest control, etc.  Dogs particularly are used as a source of income by the sale of puppies, and cats breed unchecked.  This creates masses of unwanted and neglected animals.

Swellendam SPCA has successfully engaged with the local Municipality to promulgate by-laws regarding animal sterilisation in our municipal area.  This included setting up a fine structure for non-compliance.  In addition, our inspectors are able to train as Law Enforcement Officers with the specific power to administer fines on behalf of the Municipality where owners are not compliant with the sterilisation By-Laws.

We organise regular sterilisation drives in our district.  A mobile vet team is brought in to visit the area for up to 3 days and perform the sterilisations for people who cannot afford private veterinary fees.  These drives are preceded by education initiatives at schools and proactive community work by our Field Workers to locate and identify animals for sterilisation.  This initiative is making a major difference to the numbers of unwanted and abandoned animals in our area.
