Society For The
Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals
On-going education of the general public and
our younger generations are the best tool to create animal welfare
awareness and responsible animal ownership. Swellendam SPCA
field workers proactively contact residents to advise and educate them
on animal care and improve the quality of life for their
animals.
Scheduled education drives are held regularly at schools and animal
awareness initiatives are undertaken at public events. These
activities are reinforced by articles run in the local press.
Some of our recent educational activities include:
· Workshops on animal care were presented at 3
local primary schools. The workshops were presented by
Inspector Francois Plaaitjies, local veterinarian Dr Rob Hazell and
puppy trainer Mrs Dee Hazell.
· Senior Secondary School Swellendam has incorporated study of the SPCA
and their activities as part of their Life Skills Curriculum for Grade
10 students. Representatives of the SPCA are invited to visit
them every year for this section of the curriculum, which includes a
visit to the SPCA Clinic in Railton.
·A talk on Caring for your Dogs and Cats was presented at
Gouritsrivermond during school holidays. This event was
organised by the local SAPS (SA Police Services) and ACVV (Afrikaanse
Christelike Vroue Vereniging).
·Talks at Laerskool Riviersonderend were presented on animal care and
the importance of sterilisation.
·Our Inspector and Committee Member Annatjie Ferreira visited Mickey
Mouse Pre-Primary and Mossienes Pre-Primary pre-primary schools in
Swellendam to discuss pet care and how fireworks affect animals.
·Children from Railton painted their own colourful pictures on the
walls around the Railton Clinic as part of an animal awareness
initiative. The walls are periodically refreshed by the
children under supervision of local artist Maggie Lismont.
·Swellendam celebrates International Animal Week every year with a
program of events including exhibitions of animal-related pictures done
by local children, educational talks, an open day at the Railton Clinic
and a Fun Walk for owners and pets.
·Guest speakers from the Blue Crane Working Group and Peoples
Dispensary for Sick Animals presented talks to children.
